Do Rhino Iguana make good pets - 2008/02/07 20:40 I think you should post this at the lizard section. Anyway, rhino iguanas are very big lizards which require large enclosures (at least 6*2*2 feet) and a moist, tropical habitat. If you can give them enough space, humidity and branches, then, they make good pets (I think they are protected, but I am not sure). They are not aggressive at all. But, in my opinion a water dragon is easier to care for.

Do Rhino Iguana make good pets - 2008/02/09 03:16 From what I have read up on them, I agree that they are a very large lizard, bigger than a green Iguana. So the 6x2x2 enclosure would not even begin to be big enough. They are ground dwellers mostly [as in sleeping in burrows in the ground] and ARE very agressive. SOME can be tamed by alot of handeling. They infact are considered a good DISPLAY REPTILE, so that should kinda tell ya how many are infact handable pets.
Life span is around 40 years and can be longer in captivity.
Pretty pricey too.. Will most likely have to find a breeder if even considering one. Saw several on-line, average price was $250.00
They are not on the endagered species list yet, but are considered well on the way.
So in my opinion, I agree with Houdini, that a water dragon would be easier to care for.. and a lot others.

Do Rhino Iguana make good pets - 2008/02/09 03:25 Rhino Iguanas in fact make incredible pets, however you should definately be an experienced herper. If you do purchase a Rhino I highly suggest David Blair, he is probably the most highly respected breeder in the country. I have purchased several animals from him. Please do not purchase one howerver unless you really know what you are doing, I would hate to see a Rhino lose it's life to improper care.

Do Rhino Iguana make good pets - 2008/02/09 11:54 Christianness, welcome here

If you have experience with other Iguanas I think you could get yourself into learning more about Rhino iggy's and maybe adopt or purchase one. It seems they need extra care and you would have to be prepared for that

Re:Do Rhino Iguana make good pets - 2008/02/17 05:31 Yes, I agree. They are several knowledgable breeders of these out there. They are fascinating animals. They are firecrackers when they are young and there are differences of opinions on how to deal with this. Most say, they will not calm down for a few years until they get bigger so be prepared for that. Some advise handling, other advise letting them come to you.
So you must have lots of patience and understanding and be committed to them for a long time.
They are by no means a beginner lizard but if you have these qualities, are experienced, do the research and get input from others and welcome the time and space committment, then go for it.
Fortunately, they are available in the US by some good breeders out there at the moment and should be for years to come.
I've dealt with taming many species of lizards for years with handling different techniques but I'd advise the wait for them approach for these guys using various methods of food coaxing. They may not all be the same, and dispositions may vary according to the parents and the initial treatment at birth.

Re:Do Rhino Iguana make good pets - 2008/02/29 19:31 What can I say...not very friendly lizards to be quite honest. My friend has about 6 of them in his shop and feeding them can be a nightmare. they have a habit of darting around a lot. I suppose if you were an experience iguana owner then you'd fancy this challenge, but if you want a new iguana that you can have roam the house or even stroke, then a Rhino Iggy isn't the one to get.
