Plated Lizard tail loss - 2008/02/27 20:38 My plated lizard Izzy just recently lost a part of her tail i belive it was the cause of my cat. i have my plated lizard and my 2 iguanas in one tank and i do not have a top for the tank one night my parents opened my bedroom door and didnt close it. and i woke up to my cat sitting in the tank with my lizards and my iguanas were going nuts. izzy was still hiding under the paper towels i think she was under the cat i looked at them and made sure they were ok i guess i didnt check them well enough because later on i found that izzy had lost part of her tail i cleaned it with peroxide and made sure the tank was clean and i put her back . should i take her to a vet to get her tail checked out could anyone give me some advice on how to take care of her tail it looks like theres a piece of bone sticking its very small though. im also worrried that the cat may have stepped on izzy and im afraid she might have internal injuries

Plated Lizard tail loss - 2008/02/27 22:31 I have no knowledge on plated lizards, but you said that it and 2 Iguana's are in the same tank??? How old are these guy's and did you buy them. Wondering if you did research on the Iguana's and know what is going to be required in their life time to come x's 2.
Just how big is this tank??

Then you would know from that research that a 55 gallon is the littelest that should be used and that this is for only about a year. I would say by looking at your older one of the two that he would be looking at being moved out of that in a couple months, so i don't see how any of the 3 [being in the same tank, the 29 gallon] can even move around.
It is not recommended to house any other species with an Iguana. And as they age [the Iguana's, it is not recommended to house 2 of them together]. When they are young they seek other hatchlings knowing that safety is in numbers in the wild, but that can change very fast as they mature. Iguanas can become territorial as they mature and I would worry about the safety of your other lizard as well. Just know that when an Iguana decieds to become aggresive towards another it usualy isn't pretty with the after effects. And that can happens as fast as a snap of your fingers.
So my recommendation to you is to at least get your 2 Iguana's in a 55 gallon for right now, and seperated from your other lizard.
What is the diet of this plated lizard.

Re:Plated Lizard tail loss - 2008/02/28 05:44 I know ill probly have to separate them when the iguanas get older but right now they all get along very well they dont fight at all izzy is a very calm lizard. i intend on eventually keeping izzy in the 29 gallon tank. im going to get a new tank for the iguanas when i can eventually i plan on letting them free roam.
Izzy eats superworms i give her about 2 every other day and mealworms once in a while. i leave food in with the iguanas i see her sitting at their food bowl but i havent seen her eat any of it. i feed the iguanas a mix of turnip, mustard, and collard greens with acorn squash and for their fruit i feed them mangos and bannanas.

Re:Plated Lizard tail loss - 2008/02/28 19:29 Vet check... Always when new. The vet can help you to get rid of the nasties [parasites] inside thier tummies and ultimatly help them to grow faster. Make sure to take a poo sample with you.
I would also get something in the viv for them to climb on. Did it have a top on it?
Glad to hear that you understand that they will have to be seperated when grown..

Re:Plated Lizard tail loss - 2008/02/29 18:58 If you cant take a poo sample with you, don't worry as the vet can get one himself if need be. I'd definitely take the plated lizard to the vets as any open wound is a potential health problem. I really hope they're all okay!

Re:Plated Lizard tail loss - 2009/05/08 22:57 most lizards tails will grow back naturally but if it doesn't take izzy to the vets and see what they can do just keep the wound clean
