Effects of a small tank

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2008/07/08 18:32 I have a friend taking them for the week while we go on vacation. The water dragon I think will be ok as he will be in the same tank. The beardie however I have to move back into a 30 gallon tank for the week. I will take all there lights and everything. Will the beardie be to ok for a week in the small tank? He just moved to a 75 gallon a month ago. He is around 16 months and 20 inches long. I feel bad putting him back in the small tank that he came to use in but I have to take him an hour away with another tank so I dont have room for the 75 gallon tank. Can anyone ease my mind that he will be ok?

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2008/07/08 19:22 as long as your friend can take care of him properly and doesn't handle your beardie, then everything should be fine. your beardie will be stressed and it would be best if your friend didn't disturb him unless it is to change out the water or food.

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2008/07/08 19:40 I was hoping my friend would take him out during the day is this a bad idea then. He should just be left alone. I was thinking he would want more time out of the cage since he would be in a smaller one. Now I am confused! LOL

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2008/07/08 19:50 well it would seem that he would want to be let out, but with the new environment and new face, this all will be very stressful on him. it would be best to just leave him be. he will undergo much stress for this whole thing and the last thing you want is to stress your pet out; it is possible for stress to kill an animal so it's always best to make sure that he will go through the least amnount of stress as possible.

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2008/07/08 20:21 OK that makes sense. I will let her know not to mess with him to much. Although I will say when we got him 3 months ago. He wanted out of his 30 gallon tank the first day he has been out everyday for at an hour if not more since then. I guess I will have her watch and make sure he is not stressed.

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2008/07/08 21:22 He was in the 30 gallon tank when I got him. I got his whole set up that he was in. I guess he was used to the 30 gallon when I got him. I have a new home done for the water dragon but did not want to move him so close to vacation. I figured he do better in the same cage. He is only 7 months old and still real jumpy.

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2008/07/08 21:28 I just wanted to add something in here on the bearded dragon. First do you socialize him at all? I've taken one of my male bearded dragons to school several times. It's a small school of only about 130 students but it's also a fairly small building. So he was in crowded hallways with me and class rooms with the teachers talking. People wanting to touch him. I made people back off a bit on the first time or two but now he doesn't mind. But I have others that won't tolerate all the activity around them. I think it really depends on the bearded dragon, if he enjoys being around people then it may be a good idea to allow your friend to hold him, if not well then leave him be until you get back.

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2008/07/08 21:32 how old was he when you first got him? if he was just a baby, then it's not so much that he wanted out as it was he was just getting used to the idea of a cage.
what size cage do you have the water dragon in? he should be in a 75 gallon as well. even at that age, they need that amount of room for they need lots of swimming, climbing and running around room.

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2008/07/09 02:29 I have only had the beardie 3 months. He was a rescue from craigslist. He was on the skinny side and they had no UVB on him at all. They had him in the 30 gallon tank 2 rocks and 2 small feeding dishes. He ate no veggies/ salad when I got him only meal worms and crickets. He was 18 inches when I got him andd is now 20.

The water dragon has a bigger enclosure that I just got finished with 3ft height 2ft deep and 3ft wide. This should last him a year or 2 then I will build him a huge one. I did not want to move him right before vacation is the only reason he is still in the 30 gallon. We were told the 30 gallon would last him a year. LOL I did my own research and found out differently. Oh he has his pool in there with him and get a good bath a least once a week. Of course he is out of the cage and climbing around for a good 1-2 hours a day.

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2008/07/09 16:03 okay for the beardie, he sounds like he wanted more room to move around and that's good that you got him a 75 gallon. he will be fine in the 30 for just the week. oh and as Kitesunegirl had asked earlier, has he been socialized? in other words, has he been handled by a few different people often in the time that you've had him?
as for the water dragon, i like the size of the new cage. that will provide him with plenty of room for a while. i'm glad you decided not to move him until you got back, this will be least stressful on him.

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2008/07/10 02:22 Sorry I forgot to answer the question. Yes he is social. I have 5 kids and all of them hold him as well as friends. He has never onced black beardie anyone. He would rather be held then in his cage. He loves to sit on my shoulder and be petted. Thats his favorite.

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2008/07/13 18:14 I found a teenager who is going to come over to the house and take care of them. I am going to try and move the CWD soon so he can adjust while we are gone and would not be handled as much.

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2009/01/02 10:32 hi just a quick question. there is a place near where i live which sells various reptiles, and i was wondering whether it is ok to keep bearded dragons and chinese water dragons together as the CWD's dont have the coloration that ive normally seen them with. thanks. tom

Vacation - Water dragon and Beardie - 2009/01/02 11:48 Hi lizardman. Your answer would be no. There are huge variations needed for each. The water dragon needs a humidity of 70% average. The bearded dragon would develop skin fungi if kept in the same humidity within a week or so. The bearded dragon needs virtually no humidity. The lower the better for him. It would not be possible to keep both healthy in the same environment.

Pat
