 My Feeder Rats STINK HELP!!!!!!!!! - 2008/12/31 03:20 Ok my feeder rats smell so bad! They are on rat bedding and they still really stink. At the moment I clean their cage out once every three days and it smells horrible. I'd really like to only have to clean the cage once every week cause bedding is expensive for me at the moment but If i have to twice a week. WHAT CAN I DO? or WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

 My Feeder Rats STINK HELP!!!!!!!!! - 2008/12/31 04:22 They are Feeder Rat's and I would think that shredded newspaper would be just as efficient as any bedding that you could buy and it could be changed out every day as it should be..????

 My Feeder Rats STINK HELP!!!!!!!!! - 2008/12/31 11:38 There was a thread a little while ago about using some white vinegar in their water, to help reduce the odor. An extra advantage is that the vinegar reduces bacterias in the bottle. If you try it let me know whether you find it helpful.

 My Feeder Rats STINK HELP!!!!!!!!! - 2009/01/01 12:22 Just use a teaspoon or cap full in their water bottles each time you fill it. It won't hurt the feeders or the snakes. If anything, it should be beneficial. I would imagine it would take a couple of weeks for you to see (smell) the difference.

I intend to try it on my crickets but I havent gotten a new batch in yet.

 My Feeder Rats STINK HELP!!!!!!!!! - 2009/01/02 01:45 Pat is right about this being posted about the vinegar.. But while you are trying to get this to work, might want to think about changing out the bedding more often then you apparently have been doing..
Even Pet rats would love the shreded newspapers as they can burrow into them.

 My Feeder Rats STINK HELP!!!!!!!!! - 2009/01/02 19:11 My pet Rat is on news paper and I change it daily. He has a couple of slings that he hides in that I wash every week or so. I only spray the cage down every 2 weeks. New paper helps absorb and no odor until it gets close to the 2 week marks then I wash it all out. The 5 minutes it take a day to clean out the new paper is worth the 2 week through cleaning to me.

 My Feeder Rats STINK HELP!!!!!!!!! - 2009/01/02 22:09 Ok so I've been doing a ton of research on this. And heres what Im gonna do.
1. Get them a larger more ventilated cage (a dog cage in fact insulated with common window screen so that they cant get out)
2. Litter train them (apparently very easy to do)
3. Change substrate to towels (put in a fresh towel every day and use only those towels for the rats)
