i currently have a female hognose that i bought in the summer of 1999 as a hatchling. i am planning on breeding her in the spring. my sister also has a little male, who is very light (but not albino) who i will eventually breed to my hognose in a year or two. i am quite interested in your pair, but i may have to wait before i could afford to buy them from you.

in the meantime, could you tell me more about your hognose pair? how old are they? who did you buy them from? has the female eaten well in the past? when i first got my hognose as a hatchling, she was ornery about eating for me the first time (she refused a couple of times). i then decided to place her in a brown paper lunch bag with a pinky for several hours, and that worked for me. however, if that had not worked, i had planned to scent a pinky heavily with a toad. may i suggest using a toad to scent a pinky? [i am not trying to insult your intelligence if you have already tried this ].
    please keep me updated!

i have read that western hognose snakes will go off feed on their own any time from Oct to Dec, and will "hibernate" for 6 to 8 weeks. did you aquire these as hatchlings or are they adults? if the female is in good body condition, perhaps she just needs to go through a brumation

Most hoggies if not all stop eating, mine are always fussy but healthy, now both are having sex daily so ignored the last feed.

I bought them from Jim MacDonald off kingsnake.com earlier this year. The male has always eaten great, but the female has been a problem feeder. I've even tried toad and anole scented pinkies-was going to try tiny toads, but cannot find them around here. She ate twice for me, then quit-and I have been assist-feeding her mouse parts ever since. I've tried the paper bag method, deli-cup, leaving them in with her in her cage, gotten no response.
    Even tried braining.

well, if I can find someone to offer me what I paid for them at least, that would be cool. I paid $200 plus shipping. I hate to sell them, but I'm at wits end with the female not eating, and I feel I need to concentrate on my other snakes.
