Breeding Super Worms

So my quest to breed the little guys has been going good. Out of 24 worms, I've got 6 puppe,7 dead, and the rest are starting to curl. The process is pretty simple and maybe I can give some of you ideas if your thinking about doing it.

First, get some supers. What your gonna end up doing is sperating them. I went to walmart looking for something to house them in and keep them sperated. My orignal idea was those little plastic shot glass type things, people use for jello shots. No luck finding them, but I did find a container. It came with little spacers that you could put in between 4 rows. They only give you 24 of them, and that was enough to work. I still have 2 rows, without spacers.

So you get them sperated and leave them like that for around 8-10 days. Theres no need to feed them. I gave them a pinch of corn meal, but I honestly think that, that is way I still have some getting ready to curl. After 8-10 days they will change into little alien looking things. Those are the puppe.(spelling?)
So now those little guys are gonna be like that for another week or so, and then you got your beetles.

Now, your gonna need another container. The beetles are gonna go in that for awhile. Make sure to give them plenty of corn meal. Since this is my first time doing this, I'm not sure what all they can eat. I know your also gonna want to throw in some carrot. They will eat that up and thats one way to give them water. I'm pretty sure you can give them other stuff, but I'm not too sure what. Like I said, this is my first time trying.

So after alittle while those beetles will mate, lay their eggs and die. Then..... BLAM!! Baby supers. lol. Theres lots of information about how to breed them out there. If your really interested in doing it, I'd say try it! This thread is just to give you an idea of how its done. I found videos on youtube, of people who have bred their own, and has worked out quite well. Depending on how many you need, this could take up a little bit of room.
For example, if you own 60 reptiles then breeding enough of these for all of them could take up alot of room! But if you got one or two and you wanna save money, then this is a pretty easy route. Well, thats about it. If your thinking about it, do a little more research. Any advice would be nice. I'm sure theres some people on here that could it, including myself. Thanks.

Maybe one of those plastic fishing tackle boxes with some holes cut for air would work better...heres what i mean:

woot found my old password and account name. saweet. I watched that video it was great. I thought there would be more to it than that. i ran out yesterday and bought 4 containers with 36 compartments each and a 3 tier shelve like the guy in the video was using. I got my raw oatmeal from foodlion for like 3 bucks for 2 huge containers. So i'm all excited right. I go out and buy two 50 count packs from Petco and get home and start getting my dividers in the containers. When i finish i pop open the cap to my first 50 count and low and behold theres about 10 alive and the rest are dead. I wasent to upset til i opened the second one to find about 14 alive. So i should of had 100 supers to start trying to breed them and i got 24. So i went ahead and got those in the container with a date sticker marking when i started. Gotta go back to petco today and they are gonna give me more worms for free or give me my money back. It goes to show you that big chain companies could really care less about these animals needs if it takes more than sticking stuff on a shelf or 4 green iggys in a tiny tank togethere. But i loved this post and it inspired me and hopefully if i can get it right i might start a small in home bussiness and sell them to people in my area because there is not a good provider of supers near me without having to order them and have them shipped in. So i'll keep updating on here with you and we can compare results and tips if we find something that does or doesnt work better. Should be fun and i cant wait not to have to spend 20 bucks every week on worms.

Post edited by: demonikkk, at: 2010/03/01 11:26

k i got more worms from petsmart today. I now have 3 full containers of superworms seperated into individual compartments. So 108 worms in all. Hoping for good results for you as well as myself. If we could get this down pat it would be so cool we could help inform a lot of people and save time and money. I know i'd rather talk to or buy from a reptile owner than from a super store. Petco did refund my money but there entire stock of supers where that bad. I'll keep ya updated on my success or fail rate so as we both know what to do or not do. I know my babies went through 50 crickets like they where a snack in about 3 mintues lol.

I agree I am listening for sure. Looking forward to knowing how long it takes.....I could actually take some out of my environments and start from adults.
