Venomous Snakes - 2008/10/20 22:17 There was just a post about there being a venomous snake room at a snake expo and I'm curious as to what you all think about privately owning a venomous snake.

Venomous Snakes - 2008/10/21 15:48 Once I am able to get a new place and once I have the money, I am for sure getting a western rattle snake. I can't wait. I will have it's cage locked up tight so that there won't be any problems.

Venomous Snakes - 2008/10/21 18:51 I personally think if you are a responcible owner then there is nothing wrong with owning them. Just like with any other animal, knowledge, proper care and safety go along way.

Venomous Snakes - 2008/10/21 20:33 like ithica says. there's nothing wrong with having one, there the same as any other reptile (except for the possibility of getting killed ).

keep in mind that besides venomous, there's also venomoid, meaning the venom glands have been removed. its quite controversial among venomous snake keepers though. partly since its altering the snake but also because the surgeries are often done by the person selling the snakes so they can profit more and sell for less. they do the surgery without any kinds of real medical supplies, thus resulting in infections, severe pain and stress, and sometimes even death of the snake.

Venomous Snakes - 2008/10/22 19:57 I don't plan on having my snakes venom glands removed once I get him/her. I want a rattle snake that has it all. Plus, I plan on milking the snake for it's venom and donating it to research facilites for vaccines for hospitals. I agree with Ithica and Zaroba, it all takes the responsibility, knowledge, and safety of an owner to keep a venomous animal as a pet.

Re:Venomous Snakes - 2008/10/23 02:29 I think that you really need to examine where you are living i.e. proximity to others, and how much potential access an escapee has to non reptile people, before even thinking about getting a venemous snake. No matter how careful you are there is always potential for accident. Exposing people to potentialy lethal animals is a huge risk to assume and i really think that apersons motives should be carefully examined before owning such an animal. Are you doing this to be macho or is there a real need to house these animals. The potential risks not only to the handler but to the public should be considered very closely. On the whole I see no real reason for the average person to own one of these animals, there are enough non venemous snake available to make this truly unneccisary.

Re:Venomous Snakes - 2008/10/23 22:31 I'd love to own one, how ever honestly I'd be scared shitless. So many venemous snakes are beautiful! How ever I wonder if I'd neglect them because I'd be afraid of cleaning out their cages and getting them out.

Re:Venomous Snakes - 2008/10/26 16:51 Buford, when you think about it, it is unnecessary to own any herptile. There are other reptiles that can be housed as a pet and they can be just as dangerous yet there is nothing wrong with owning them. There is always room for accidents, but at the same time, all it really takes is the responsibility of owning a dangerous animal as a pet. If other, potentially more dangerous animals can be housed, what's wrong with having a snake that's venomous. Just because it is a dangerous animal, we should reject the owning of it? I don't agree with that one bit, especially since there are people with crocodiles and large snakes as pets with no problem what so ever.
In my area, people have a higher chance of being bit by wild rattle snakes than one that I own getting out and hurting them. I will be making sure that I have the right security on the cage I will be having my rattle snake in. The only time that I have had a snake escape on me is when I have it in a cage that has something wrong with it. All of the cages that are in great condition and have the right security measures, none of those snakes have ever escaped.

Re:Venomous Snakes - 2008/10/28 04:12 As I said average person in your case I feel confident that you would be taking every precaution. I have a real problem with the uninformed getting overfaced and putting others in harms way. I feel this way about all types of animals no just herps but dogs and other creatures. I fear that the uninformed and the igorant will use these animals as signs of there machisimo for lack of a better word and thereby endanger not only themselves but others as well. So I do question the need to make them more redily available for general consumption.

Re:Venomous Snakes - 2008/10/28 20:46 Well thank you. I completely agree with you. The uninformed should not have anything that could be potentially be dangerous to the owner or anyone nearby.
