red tail boa RI injections - 2009/03/12 17:22 I just got a abused red tail boa. i've had him for about 5 monthes. The old owner had him in a tank with a temp. of about 76 degrees. He has a case of RI. I took him to the vet yesterday and I now have to give him daily injections of Cefazolin. I think it may have stressed him out because last night him slept on the colder side of his habitat all night long. I hate having to give him shots , but i'm praying it will make him better . Does anyone have any related stories of having to use the same medicine?

Hi Snakeman. I have 6 rescued Boa's and 2 of them had very bad RI and mouth rot. One had mouth rot so bad that he had to have a portion of his jaw bone removed and he also has to have needle injections. Yesterday he lunged at me. Im sure it stresses them out but they will be much appreciative when they feel better. The second Boa receives injections via a tube that i put down his throat.

Re:red tail boa RI injections - 2009/03/13 21:43 thank you dcboa. She seems to be feeling better. She is very tame and docile. Even when she gets the shots she doesn't get to upset. Now I'm trying to find a temp. controled thermostat so I don't have to keep such a close watch on her cage and keep turning the heat light on and off. If anyone knows of a good site to order them off please tell me. I'm alspo trying to put a picture of her on here but I keep getting a error. Ant advice would be appreciated.

Re:red tail boa RI injections - 2009/03/14 09:20 I have a RTB that I got from someone; with a similar situation we had to give her injections every three days for three weeks of fortaz, as well as nasal drops twice a day. Unfortunately we found out we were at least #3 home for her....and we never actually found out her origin or anything else. She was not very happy to be around us! She continual struck at us for the first week, out of the tank not in it. So we left her alone, and have yet to take her out and handle her. It has been about 1 month and a week since we got her. She is now eating healthy, still acts as if she wants nothing to do with us, though. I got laid off so her recheck had to be canceled...so we are just watching her now. When she gets worked up she will make some noises, like high pitched squeals but the RI is gone, so with a little patience and kindness I am sure your guy/gal will come around and do great! Kudos to you for rescuing him/her!

Re:red tail boa RI injections - 2009/03/15 21:33 Here is a picture of Buddy. She is a female, but the name buddy just fits her because she is so nice and docile. Today was her fifth day of getting a shot every morning. She barely even flinches when she gets them now. She seems to be doing much better. She hasn't had the wheezing when she breathes out in 2 days. She goes back to the vet tommorow to see if she still needs more treatment. At the last appointment the vet said she might have to get shots for 30 days, but hopefully not.
Thank you all for your posts. It helps to hear other people's stories and advice. Even though i've only had her for almost 6 months, I am still a nervous wreck when she is sick.
